Spellbound: the virtual band with real music

Spellbound, Julie Scott

A modern folk fairytale born in isolation.

The Hague-based singer and artist Julie Scott shared her song Deep Fall on Facebook, inviting her musician friends to contribute parts. Peter Slager, bassist of renowned Dutch band BLØF, was moved by the song and suggested they create an album together.

In the midst of the pandemic, a virtual collaboration was born, bringing together a small group of musical friends. The result: Anam Cara (Gaelic for “soul friend”) – a 13-track album of atmospheric songs that breathe the spirit of 1970s folk with a contemporary twist.

For over a year, each musician worked at their own pace and in their own space, crafting a unique and heartfelt album. Though physically apart, they created something deeply connected and warm. The first time the musicians met in person was in the summer of 2021 – after more than six months of remote collaboration.

The album’s theme is everything we missed during the lockdowns: being together, sharing stories, and finding connection. Anam Cara is a woven tapestry of shared experience, captured in music and lyrics. Think campfire stories, sung in harmony.

“Physically distant yet incredibly intimate — a testament not only to their adventurous spirit but to their deep love of music.”
Altcountry Forum

“A beautifully crafted album by musicians who sound as though they’ve played together for years. The fact they recorded it separately makes it even more magical. More from Spellbound? Peter Slager is in. So am I.”
Real Roots Cafe

“With the strings invoking Robert Kirby (Nick Drake/Shelagh MacDonald) at his best, Scott channels Polly Harvey. It is a rich and rewarding track with which to close the show. You Are Here it is called, and I am glad I was.”
